11 year old Shannon Tavarez; performer of Broadway's, Disney’s The Lion King, (from Queens) was diagnosed with AML, in April 2010. AML stands for acute myelogenous leukemia, a cancer of the myeloid line of blood cells characterized by the rapid growth of abnormal white blood cells that accumulate in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of normal blood cells.
family, friends, many great foundations, and all of the cast, crew and staff at The Lion King and Disney Theatrical Productions, are working together to find a compatible donor for her. They've put together a web site; https://www.dkmsamericas.org/bone-marrow-donors/become-marrow-donor, organized a bone marrow donor drive, and worked to get as much information about leukemia out there as possible. They want to get as many people tested as possible. Some people think that the test for compatibility is scary; they think it is going to hurt/dangerous. All it really takes to get started is a cotton swab of the inside of your cheek.
Please get tested today. You might be a match.
